Effect of Equipment Age on Reliability
Wednesday, April 12, 11am-12pm
It has been assumed for a long time that equipment will deteriorate with age, i.e., its reliability will decrease with time, based on experience acquired in other industries. A careful analysis of medical equipment failure rate as a function of age shows that this hypothesis is not always true for most equipment types. Certain equipment types do show the classical wear-out pattern but many others do not. On the other hand, a few types and brands of equipment exhibit high failure rates after only a few years of use. The results of this analysis can help to determine whether maintenance strategies should be revised for older equipment and which types and brands of equipment should be carefully evaluated prior to equipment planning and selection in order to minimize risks of patient care and high maintenance costs.
